When it comes to brow tattooing, one of the most common questions I hear is, “What’s the difference between microblading and nanoblading?” The truth is, they are the same procedure. Both use a handheld tool with ultra-fine needles to create tiny hair-like strokes that mimic natural brows. The only difference lies in the size of the needle used—some artists use the term “nanoblading” when referring to smaller, thinner blades, but the overall process and results are the same. So, if you’re searching for microblading or nanoblading, know that you’re really looking at the same brow tattooing technique.

Now, let’s dive into the 10 most common questions people ask about microblading and give you clear, honest answers so you can decide if this treatment is right for you.

Everything You Need to Know About Microblading
Everything You Need to Know About Microblading by Haley Wight- DAELA Scottsdale

1. What is microblading?

Microblading is a form of cosmetic tattooing designed to enhance your eyebrows with natural-looking strokes. Unlike a traditional tattoo, the pigment is placed more superficially in the skin, which means it fades over time instead of lasting forever. The goal is to create brows that look soft and realistic, blending seamlessly with your natural hair.

2. How long does microblading last?

On average, microblading lasts between 2 to 3 years and even longer, depending on your skin type, lifestyle, and how well you follow aftercare instructions. Oily skin tends to fade faster, while dry or normal skin may hold pigment longer.

3. Does microblading hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as mild discomfort rather than pain. At DAELA, we use numbing agents before and during the procedure to keep you as comfortable as possible. Many clients are surprised at how tolerable the process is.

4. What is the healing process like?

The healing process takes about 10 to 14 days. Your brows may look darker at first, then they’ll lighten and soften as the skin heals. Some scabbing or flaking is normal. After the initial healing, it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the pigment to fully settle in the skin.

5. What happens at a microblading appointment?

Your appointment begins with a consultation and detailed brow mapping. I measure and outline your brows to ensure balance and symmetry, then work with you to choose the best color for your skin tone and hair. Once you’re fully numb and comfortable, I create fine hair strokes using the microblading tool. The entire appointment usually takes 2 to 3 hours.

6. How do I prepare for my appointment?

To get the best results, you’ll want to avoid alcohol, caffeine, and blood thinners before your appointment, and let your brows grow naturally (no plucking). Arrive with clean skin and no heavy brow makeup. Following a simple pre-care checklist ensures smoother healing and better pigment retention.

7. Who is a good candidate for microblading?

Most people with sparse, uneven, or over-plucked brows are great candidates. However, microblading isn’t recommended if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on certain medications, or have specific skin conditions. During your consultation, we’ll review your medical history and skin type to make sure this is safe for you. At DAELA Scottsdale, we also offer machine nano brows and ombre powder brows, so if microblading isn’t for your skin type, no worries, we have other amazing options!

8. How do I care for my brows after microblading?

Aftercare is critical to long-term results. You’ll need to avoid heavy sweating, swimming, saunas, and direct sun exposure while your brows heal. Keep the area clean and follow the aftercare instructions your artist provides. Most importantly, don’t pick at scabs or flakes, as this can remove pigment.

9. How much does microblading cost?

Prices vary by city and artist expertise, experienced artists will charge between $600 and $900 for an initial session, with touchups ranging from $100 to $400. At DAELA, we price transparently with pricing for touchups and the initial session clearly posted.

10. What’s the difference between microblading and other brow tattoo styles?

Microblading uses hair-like strokes for a natural, fluffy look. Other brow tattoo styles include ombre powder brows, which create a soft, shaded look, and nano brows, which use a machine instead of a handheld blade to create strokes. Each style has its advantages, and often the best results come from a combination of techniques customized to your face, skin type, and preferences.

Pros and Cons of Microblading

Like any beauty treatment, microblading has its advantages and limitations.

Pros:

  • Natural-looking results that mimic real brow hairs

  • Saves time by reducing or eliminating the need for brow makeup

  • Semi-permanent, so adjustments can be made over the years as styles or preferences change

  • Long-lasting compared to makeup, typically 2 to 3+ years

  • Boosts confidence and enhances facial symmetry

Cons:

  • Results vary depending on skin type (oily skin may blur or fade faster)

  • Requires touchups for maintenance

  • Healing period involves flaking or scabbing, which some clients find inconvenient

  • Not suitable for everyone (certain health conditions or medications may disqualify you)

  • While rare, pigment retention can differ from person to person, meaning your brows may fade sooner than expected

Microblading is wonderful for many people, but it’s important to go in with realistic expectations and an understanding that results are unique to each client.

Common Microblading Myths

There’s a lot of misinformation online about microblading. Let’s clear up a few common myths.

Myth 1: Microblading is permanent.
Not true. Unlike body tattoos, this procedure is neither permanent nor semi-permanent. The pigment naturally fades, but this fading varies from person-to-person. You will eventually have the option to refresh or adjust your brows over time.

Myth 2: Microblading ruins your natural brows.
Also false. It does not damage your natural brow hair. In fact, many clients notice their brows grow back fuller after leaving them alone for the treatment.

Myth 3: All results look the same.
Definitely not. A skilled artist customizes the shape, color, and stroke pattern for each client’s unique face and features. No two brows should ever look identical.

Myth 4: Microblading is only for people with no brows.
While it’s life-changing for clients with sparse brows, it’s also amazing for people with fuller brows who want to refine their shape or add subtle definition.

How to Choose the Right Artist

The success of your treatment depends heavily on the skill and experience of your artist. Here’s what to look for when choosing microblading in Scottsdale:

  • Portfolio of healed results: Always check photos of healed brows, not just fresh work. This shows you how their technique holds up over time.

  • Experience and training: Look for an artist with advanced training and years of experience specifically in brow tattooing.

  • Hygiene and professionalism: The studio should follow strict safety and sterilization practices.

  • Communication style: Your artist should take time to understand your goals, explain the process, and set realistic expectations.

  • Client reviews: Feedback from real clients speaks volumes about both the results and the overall experience.

At DAELA Scottsdale, we pride ourselves on artistry, safety, and transparency. My approach is always collaborative; you’ll have a say in shape and style, and I’ll guide you toward what will look best long-term.

Final Thoughts

Microblading, the original cosmetic tattoo, is still one of the most transformative beauty treatments available today, giving you brows that look natural, effortless, and perfectly shaped. Whether you call it microblading or nanoblading, the goal is the same: enhancing your features with artistry and precision. If you’ve been on the fence, know that with the right artist, the results can be life-changing.

One of the things I love most about lip blush tattooing is when a client brings in their favorite lipstick. Sometimes it is a shade they have worn for years. Other times it is something they just discovered and fell in love with. Either way, the question is the same:
“Can you make my lips look like this forever?”

Yes, we can.

Translating lipstick colors into custom lip blush tattoos is a delicate process that combines artistry, experience, and a deep understanding of how color heals in the skin. I also want to give credit where it is due. The companies that create these lipsticks put so much thought and beauty into their formulas and colors. It is a joy to use their work as inspiration. Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite lip blush matches and the exact lipsticks that inspired them.

Each one of these brands deserves the spotlight for creating such thoughtful, iconic shades.

MAKEUP BY MARIO

MoistureGlow Plumping Lip Color in Poppy

Poppy is juicy, fresh, and unapologetically vibrant. It brings warmth and energy in a way that still feels elegant. When a client brought this one in, we softened the intensity slightly to ensure it healed beautifully as a sheer, watermelon-toned blush. The final result had all the freshness of the original with just enough transparency to feel timeless.

CHARLOTTE TILBURY

Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk is one of the most requested lipstick matches I have ever done. Its soft nude-pink tone is both classic and contemporary. It flatters so many skin tones and feels effortless. When we replicate this as lip blush, we preserve the muted rose undertone while adjusting for the client’s natural lip color. The healed results are subtle, romantic, and elegant.

Yes, this counts. Clients love the berry tint of Burt’s Bees Pomegranate for its simplicity and comfort. I have translated it into lip blush more than once. Final Thoughts

Your favorite lipstick is more than just a color. It is part of your story. Whether it reminds you of a special moment or just makes you feel a little more pulled together, it matters. That is why I love recreating these shades as lip blush tattoos. The goal is not to change your look but to preserve it in the most natural, long-lasting way possible.

If you have a favorite lipstick that you cannot live without, bring it with you to your consultation. Together we can design a custom blush that honors the color you love while giving you something truly lasting.

Everything You Need to Know About Inked & Inkless Treatments

By Hollis Mermelstein, Licensed Aesthetician & Paramedical Scar & Stretch Mark Tattoo Artist at DAELA Scottsdale

When it comes to healing from trauma, surgery, or injury, scars are often the last physical reminder left behind. And for many of us, those reminders go beyond the surface. That’s exactly why I’m so passionate about scar camouflage, because it’s more than just improving the look of skin. It’s about helping you feel confident and comfortable in your body again.

At DAELA Scottsdale, I offer both inked and inkless scar camouflage treatments. Each method serves a different purpose, and I always create a treatment plan that’s tailored specifically to your scar, your skin, and your long-term goals. If you’re curious about the difference between these techniques, or wondering if scar camouflage is right for you, keep reading! I’ve got you covered, literally.

Scar Camouflage in Scottsdale at DAELA
Scar Camouflage 101: After First Session- Multiple sessions are required.

What Is Scar Camouflage?

Scar camouflage is a specialized type of paramedical tattooing. Depending on the method, it either blends your scar into the surrounding skin using pigment (that’s the “inked” version) or triggers natural healing responses using a serum (that’s the “inkless” version). The goal isn’t to erase the scar entirely; it’s to soften the contrast, improve texture, and help the area look and feel more balanced.

Both approaches are safe, effective, and non-invasive and choosing the right one (or both) matters. That’s where I come in.

Before & After of Successful Scar Camouflage Completion by Hollis

Inked vs. Inkless: What’s the Difference?

Here’s a quick breakdown of the two main scar camouflage methods I use in studio:

  • Inked Scar Camouflage: I use a cosmetic tattoo machine to implant a custom-blended pigment into the scar tissue. This works beautifully when the scar is lighter than your natural skin tone, helping it blend in more seamlessly.

  • Inkless Scar Camouflage: With this method, I use the same tattoo technique but skip the pigment entirely. Instead, I infuse a healing serum designed to stimulate collagen, smooth texture, and reduce redness or discoloration. This method is great for raised, red, or darker scars.

In many cases, we’ll combine both methods in a series. For example, you might start with inkless treatments to calm and flatten the scar, then finish with an inked session once the skin is ready for color correction. Every plan is custom, and we’ll decide together what makes the most sense for your unique scar and skin.

Not Sure Which One You Need? That’s What I’m Here For.

During your consultation at DAELA Scottsdale, I’ll evaluate your scar based on color, texture, location, and healing history. Some clients benefit most from a few inkless sessions. Others need a combination of both techniques over time. My job is to assess your needs and walk you through the plan step by step.

And if your scar isn’t a candidate for tattooing? I’ll be honest about that too. Not every scar responds well to treatment, and I’ll never recommend a service that isn’t right for your skin.

Scar Serum Treatments at DAELA Scottsdale by Hollis

When Can You Start Scar Camouflage?

This is one of the most common questions I get and it’s such an important one. Your scar needs to be fully healed before we can begin treatment. That usually means waiting at least 12 months after the original injury or surgery.

You’ll know your scar is ready when:

  • It’s no longer red, itchy, or raised

  • The color has stabilized

  • There’s no more scabbing or sensitivity

Jumping in too early can interrupt your skin’s healing process and lead to poor results. I’ll always check your skin thoroughly to make sure we’re starting at the right time.

What to Avoid After Getting Scar Camouflage

Aftercare is everything. Here are the biggest mistakes to avoid if you want the best long-term results:

  • Skipping aftercare: Healing protocols are there for a reason. Follow them closely.

  • Sun exposure: UV rays can fade pigment and irritate healing skin. Keep the area covered.

  • Picking or scratching: Let your body shed naturally. No peeling or picking!

  • Using harsh skincare: Avoid actives like retinols, acids, or exfoliants until fully healed.

  • Skipping your follow-up sessions: Most scars require a few sessions to reach full results—don’t stop halfway through.

I’ll walk you through exactly how to care for your skin, and I’ll be available throughout your healing journey if questions come up.

Does Scar Camouflage Fade Over Time?

Yes, the inked version can fade. Pigment naturally fades over time due to age, sun exposure, and skin turnover. Many clients enjoy their results for 3–5 years before considering a touch-up.

Inkless camouflage, on the other hand, focuses more on texture and collagen remodeling. These results tend to be more permanent, though every scar is different. I’ll give you realistic expectations during our consultation, via phone, email, text, or in person. You’ll know exactly what to expect.

Inkless Serum Treatments
Inkless and Inked Treatments work on Stretch marks as well!

How Is Scar Camouflage Different from a Regular Tattoo?

This is a big one. Paramedical tattooing isn’t the same as body art and the tools, pigments, and techniques reflect that.

Traditional tattoo ink is bold, dark, and designed for contrast. Scar camouflage pigment is custom-matched to your skin tone and implanted in ultra-thin layers for a natural finish. We also use gentler machines and techniques designed specifically for delicate or damaged skin. This is precise work that requires experience, training, and a deep understanding of skin healing.

Can All Scars Be Camouflaged?

Not all, but many can. Here’s a general guide:

Best candidates:

  • Flat, light-colored scars

  • Fully healed stretch marks

  • Post-surgical scars (including tummy tucks, C-sections, etc.)

Better suited for inkless:

  • Raised, red, or dark scars

  • Textured scars that need smoothing before color correction

Not ideal:

  • Keloid scars (they can worsen with tattooing)

If you’re not sure which category your scar falls into, I’ll help you figure it out during your consultation. I’ll never push a treatment that’s not safe or effective for you.

Stretch mark camo with inkless serum treatments

Ready to Feel More Comfortable in Your Skin?

Scars can carry so much emotion and that’s exactly why this work matters. Whether your scar represents healing, transformation, or resilience, you deserve to feel at peace with how your skin looks and feels.

If you’ve been thinking about scar camouflage, I’d love to meet you. We’ll talk through your goals, evaluate your scar together, and build a plan that feels realistic and supportive from start to finish.

Why is PicoWay Your Safest Bet?

If you’ve ever been told that laser isn’t safe for your skin tone, then I’m here to tell you that’s no longer true. The beauty industry is finally catching up, and I’m proud to be part of a team that’s leading the way. At DAELA Scottsdale and DAELA Portland, we use the PicoWay® laser, a gold-standard device that’s safe, effective, and inclusive for all skin tones, especially melanin-rich skin.

As an esthetician and laser technician who treats a wide range of skin types every day, I know how confusing (and honestly frustrating) it can be to find treatments that actually work without risking damage. So, let’s get into why PicoWay is different, how it protects melanin-rich skin, and why having a trained, caring provider matters just as much as the laser itself.

The Truth About Laser & Melanin-Rich Skin
The Truth About Laser & Melanin-Rich Skin by Bella Mercado

What Do We Mean by Melanin-Rich Skin?

When we say “melanin-rich skin,” we’re talking about skin tones that contain a higher concentration of melanin, which is the pigment that gives our skin its color. This often includes people of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC+) backgrounds, along with many individuals of Latinx, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Southeast Asian descent.

Melanin is beautiful and powerful, but it also means the skin can react differently to heat and trauma. In the world of laser treatments, that used to mean very limited—and sometimes risky—options. But PicoWay has changed the game.

Melanin Rich Skin laser Treatments at DAELA Scottsdale
The Truth About Laser & Melanin-Rich Skin by Bella Mercado

Why Traditional Lasers Haven’t Been Safe for Darker Skin Tones

Most older lasers use thermal (heat-based) energy to break up pigmentation or target specific skin concerns. That heat doesn’t always play well with melanin, which is more sensitive to damage caused by inflammation or excessive energy.

This is why people with deeper skin tones have historically faced:

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)

  • Hypopigmentation

  • Burns

  • Textural damage

Basically, more risk than reward. And that’s not okay.

Why PicoWay Is the Safer Solution for Melanin-Rich Skin

PicoWay stands out because it doesn’t rely on heat to get the job done. It uses ultra-short picosecond pulses (that’s trillionths of a second) to deliver energy with speed and precision. Instead of heating pigment, it shatters it mechanically into tiny particles that your body can naturally remove.

This makes PicoWay:

  • Gentler on melanin-rich skin

  • Less likely to cause inflammation

  • Effective on all skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–VI)

  • A go-to for both pigmentation correction and skin rejuvenation

It’s not just safer—it’s smarter.

Safe Melanin Rich Skin Laser Treatments
The Truth About Laser & Melanin-Rich Skin by Bella Mercade

What We Can Treat with PicoWay

At DAELA Scottsdale, we use PicoWay to treat a wide range of skin concerns that often affect melanin-rich skin, including:

  • Hyperpigmentation (sun spots, age spots, freckles)

  • Melasma

  • Acne scars and texture

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Tattoo removal (even stubborn ink colors)

  • General skin rejuvenation

Whether you’re dealing with dark spots, dullness, or old acne scars, we can create a custom plan that works with your skin, not against it.

See me at DAELA Scottsdale, and let’s talk through your skin goals, your treatment options, and what’s actually possible when you have the right technology and the right team behind you.

What to Expect from Your Treatment

Every treatment starts with a thorough consultation and skin analysis. We’ll discuss your skin history, lifestyle, goals, and sensitivities. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, we customize every setting and every pass to suit your individual needs.

After your session, you might experience:

  • Mild redness or warmth (typically gone in a few hours)

  • Temporary darkening of pigment spots

  • A slight frosted appearance on tattoos or pigmented areas

  • A progressive glow and brightening effect over the next several weeks

Most clients are back to work or their routine right away. It’s a zero-downtime treatment with major payoff.

Why Your Provider Matters Just as Much as the Laser

This part is so important. You can have the best device in the world, but without proper training and experience, results can still go wrong, especially on darker skin.

That’s where I come in. At DAELA, we don’t just use inclusive technology, we prioritize inclusive training. I’ve studied how to treat melanin-rich skin safely, effectively, and with deep respect. My approach is always progressive, not aggressive, with treatment plans that honor your skin’s integrity and long-term health.

I’ll guide you through every part of the process, explaining what’s happening, setting real expectations, and making sure you feel informed and confident from start to finish.

Let’s Redefine Laser Together

You deserve skincare options that are safe, thoughtful, and actually designed for you. And when it comes to laser, you don’t have to choose between results and safety anymore.

Whether you’ve been burned by the industry (literally or figuratively) or you’re just starting to explore laser for the first time, I’m here to support you.

Wild & Masculine Nano Brows for Men

Let’s set the record straight: cosmetic tattooing isn’t just for women. More and more men are stepping into the brow game, but not for overly styled, obvious brows. They want something that looks wild, masculine, and completely natural. That’s where I come in.

At DAELA Scottsdale, I offer Machine Nano Brows for Men, my signature technique designed to enhance your brows without softening your edge. These are your brows, only better.

What Are Machine Nano Brows?

Machine nano brows use an ultra-fine tattooing needle to create individual, hair-like strokes that blend seamlessly with your natural brow hair. Think of it as refined chaos: intentionally rugged, slightly untamed, and 100% masculine.

No blocky brow shapes. No makeup-y fill-ins. Just realistic texture and density that’s low-maintenance and built to last.

Why Guys Are Getting Brow Tattoos

Let’s be honest, thinning brows, old scars, or naturally patchy can mess with anyone’s confidence. Most guys aren’t trying to change their look entirely, they just want to look more like themselves again.

Here’s what brow tattooing can do for men:

  • Restore lost brow hair (thanks, genetics or over-plucking in the 90s)

  • Create structure without looking done-up

  • Cover up scars from past injuries or surgeries

  • Add subtle fullness for a cleaner, more defined look

  • Save time—no brow pencils, no hassle

And best of all? Most people can’t even tell you had anything done. They just know you look better.

Designed for Your Face (and Your Vibe)

When you come in for your appointment, we’ll have a no-pressure consult. I’ll map out a brow shape that works with your bone structure and existing hair. I take into account face shape, growth patterns, and most importantly, your style.

Want something sharp and bold? Got it. Prefer something soft and low-key? We’ll make it happen.

This isn’t about giving you perfectly symmetrical brows. It’s about honoring what’s naturally there and making it look its best.

The Healing Process

Machine nano brows for men heal fast. Expect a little darkness the first few days, followed by light flaking. After 7–10 days, they’ll settle into a more natural tone. I’ll see you back in about 6–8 weeks for a quick touch-up to lock in the final look.

They’ll typically last year’s depending on skin type and lifestyle; gym rats and sun-lovers, I’m looking at you. You can always pop in for a refresh if need be.

Let’s talk brows, because if you’ve ever wished yours were just a little fuller, a little more structured, or a whole lot easier to maintain, Hybrid Machine Nano Brows might just be your new favorite obsession.

Also known as combo brows, hybrid nano brows are the perfect mix of soft shading and realistic machine hair strokes, and I absolutely love creating them here at DAELA Scottsdale.

Hybrid Machine Nano Brows DAELA Scottsdale
Hybrid Machine Nano Brows: The Best of Both Brow Worlds by Chloe Wight of DAELA Scottsdale

So, What Are Hybrid Machine Nano Brows?

Hybrid machine nano brows combine hair-like strokes (created with a fine tattooing needle using a machine) and pixelated shading to add definition, dimension, and fullness. The result? Brows that look both natural and polished, like your best brow day, every day.

The hair strokes are typically placed in the front (to mimic natural growth), while the soft shading fills in the mid-to-tail area for structure and depth.

They’re the perfect balance of realism + shape.

Who Are They Great For?

Honestly? Almost everyone.

Hybrid machine nano brows are especially great for:

  • People with sparse or uneven brows

  • Clients who want a fuller look without going fully powdered

  • Those who’ve over-plucked or lost shape over time

  • Anyone who wants to wake up with ready-to-go brows

  • People who are curious about microblading but want something softer and more versatile

And unlike traditional microblading, the machine method is gentler on the skin and works well for more skin types, including oily or sensitive skin.

Why Are They So Popular?

Because they give you the best of both worlds:

  • Hair strokes for texture

  • Shading for fullness

  • Longevity and low maintenance

They heal beautifully, fade gracefully, and give you that effortless, “I just have great brows” vibe without ever looking overdone. Plus, they can be totally customized to your face shape, brow goals, and natural hair pattern.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Here’s how it all goes down:

  1. Consult & Design
We’ll chat about your brow goals and map out a shape that suits your features and style. Think: symmetrical but still natural.

  2. Color Match
I’ll custom-blend a pigment that works with your skin tone and natural brow color.

  3. Numbing
A topical numbing cream keeps you comfy throughout the process.

  4. Tattooing Begins
Using a cosmetic tattoo machine, I’ll create hair strokes and layer in soft shading. The process takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.

Hybrid Machine Nano Brows DAELA Scottsdale

Aftercare & Healing

The healing process is pretty chill:

  • Expect some darkness the first few days

  • A little light flaking or peeling around day 4–7

  • Your brows will soften and lighten as they heal

Avoid workouts, steam, and makeup on the brows during the healing window (usually 7–10 days). I’ll send you home with everything you need for aftercare—including my favorite healing balm.

You’ll come back in 6–8 weeks for a perfecting session, where we lock in the color and make any adjustments.

The Secret to That Effortless, Sun-Kissed Glow (Without the Sunburn!)

Watercolor faux freckles? Well, you know those people who just naturally have the cutest little sprinkle of freckles across their nose and cheeks? The kind that looks like they just got back from a weekend in the sun, without trying? I’m here to tell you… you can have that too. No beach trip (or UV damage) required.

I am Chloe Wight co-owner of DAELA Scottsdale, I specialize in Faux Freckles—and mine have a watercolor feel, a softer, more realistic twist on traditional freckle tattoos that brings a playful, sun-kissed look to your skin in the most natural way possible.

Watercolor Faux Freckles

What Are Faux Freckles?

Unlike some freckle tattoos that can look too bold, too dark, or too perfectly placed, my Watercolor Faux Freckle technique uses soft layering and varied tones to create a subtle, barely-there flush of freckles that look like they’ve always been there. They’re gently tattooed using cosmetic pigments, and I space them out and cluster them in a way that mimics how freckles naturally show up on sun-loved skin.

Think: light, diffused, and dreamy, like watercolor on skin.

Watercolor Faux Freckles

Why Do People Love Faux Freckles?

Let me count the ways…

  • They add instant charm. Freckles have this youthful, carefree vibe that makes your face feel more alive—even without makeup.

  • They enhance your natural features. Faux freckles draw attention to your cheekbones, nose, and eyes in the most subtle way.

  • They’re trendy and timeless. From editorial beauty to TikTok filters, freckles are having a major moment, and they’re here to stay.

  • No sun damage required. Get the glow without compromising your skin.

  • They’re just plain fun. Honestly, who doesn’t want to add a little sparkle to their face?

What to Expect at Your Appointment

At your appointment, we’ll chat about the look you’re going for—whether you want a full sprinkle across the cheeks and nose, or just a few “beauty mark” style freckles here and there. I’ll custom mix tones that work with your skin and blend them seamlessly using my Watercolor Freckle technique.

The whole process takes a couple hours or less, and most freckles heal within 5–7 days. The best part? They fade gracefully over time (typically 6–12 months), so they’re low-commitment but high reward.

Aftercare for faux freckles is simple but essential to ensure a beautiful, natural looking heal. For the first 7–10 days, keep the area clean and dry and avoid heavy sweating, direct sun exposure, makeup, and skincare products on the freckled area. Gently cleanse with a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of the recommended aftercare ointment if advised by your artist and resist the urge to pick or scratch as the freckles soften and settle into the skin. Once healed, always protect your faux freckles with SPF to maintain their soft, sun-kissed appearance.

Freckles, But Make Them You

Faux Freckles aren’t about perfection, they’re about personality. Whether you’re embracing your inner sun goddess, adding character to your complexion, or just in the mood for something fun and fresh, I’m here for it.

Let’s bring those freckles to life.

Hair loss can affect confidence in deeply personal ways—whether you’re dealing with a receding hairline, thinning areas, scars from hair transplants, or simply want to restore density. At DAELA Cosmetic Tattoo, we offer a non-surgical solution that’s changing lives every day: Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP). This guide, by Jocelyn Safko of DAELA Portland & DAELA Vancouver will walk you through the most common reasons people seek SMP and what makes this treatment so transformative.

Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for Hair Density at DAELA
Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for Hair Density at DAELA

What Is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation is a form of cosmetic tattooing that replicates the appearance of natural hair follicles using pigment and a precision tattoo machine. It creates the illusion of a fuller head of hair, improves hairline definition, and camouflages scars. SMP is not hair regrowth—but it’s often mistaken for it because of how realistic the results look.

Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for Hair Transplant Scars at DAELA
Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for Hair Transplant Scars at DAELA

SMP for Hair Transplant Scars

Hair transplant scars—whether from FUT (strip method) or FUE (follicular unit extraction)—can be just as emotionally impactful as hair loss itself. SMP can blend these scars into your natural scalp tone by implanting tiny pigment deposits between existing follicles and along the scar line. Whether your scar is thick, raised, pale, or pink, we work to match the surrounding area and soften the visual disruption.

SMP is particularly effective for:

  • Linear scars from FUT transplants

  • Dot-like scars from FUE procedures

  • Irregular scarring or pigmentation caused by multiple surgeries

SMP for Women's hair Density at DAELA
Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for Hair Density at DAELA
SMP for Women's hair Density at DAELA
Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for Hair Density at DAELA

SMP for Women’s Density

Hair loss in women is often more diffuse than in men. That’s why SMP for women isn’t about creating a shaved look—it’s about enhancing the appearance of thicker, denser hair. By carefully layering pigment between existing strands, we minimize visible scalp and restore a sense of fullness, especially along the part line and crown.

Women seek SMP for:

  • Postpartum hair loss

  • Hormonal thinning

  • Aging-related density loss

  • Trichotillomania-related gaps

Because we specialize in natural, seamless results, SMP is often undetectable—even when the hair is pulled back or styled in updos.

SMP for Scalp Scars
Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for Scalp Scars at DAELA

SMP for Scalp Scars

Whether caused by surgery, injury, burns, or trauma, scalp scars can interrupt hair growth and make people feel self-conscious. SMP offers a camouflage solution that restores visual uniformity to the scalp and creates a more balanced aesthetic.

We see clients with:

  • Childhood injuries

  • Surgical scars (non-transplant-related)

  • Accidental lacerations or burns

  • Skin graft or trauma-related scarring

Each scar is unique, which is why your SMP plan will be personalized based on the scar’s texture, depth, color, and location.

SMP for Hair Loss at DAELA
Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP for General Hair Loss at DAELA

SMP for General Hair Loss

For men and women experiencing pattern baldness or total hair loss, SMP delivers an incredibly natural “buzz cut” or shadow effect. We create a customized hairline and replicate natural follicle patterns across the scalp. This approach works for:

  • Male pattern baldness (receding or full crown loss)

  • Female pattern hair loss

  • Alopecia (in some forms)

  • Those who prefer a shaved or low-maintenance look

The illusion of hair is so realistic, most people won’t know you’ve had anything done—just that you look fresh, confident, and effortlessly put together.

SMP is a multi-session process
Comprehensive Guide to Scalp Micropigmentation: SMP Multi-Session Process

What to Expect: The Process

SMP typically requires 2–3 sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Each session gradually builds pigment density and creates a layered, dimensional look. Healing is quick, and while some light redness may occur, most clients return to daily life within a day or two. Results last several years with proper care and occasional touch-ups.

Why Clients Choose DAELA for SMP

At DAELA Cosmetic Tattoo, we combine precision technique with compassionate care. Our SMP treatments are tailored to your specific needs—whether that’s a subtle fill-in or full coverage. We work with all skin tones and all hair types, ensuring natural-looking results across the board.

Clients come to us not just for transformation—but for trust. From the moment you walk in, you’re treated with respect, confidentiality, and the highest level of artistry.

SPF is a must to help protect the color and longevity of cosmetic tattoos.

We LOVE a good sunscreen! There are so many to choose from!  So, first and foremost: YES, please always wear SPF to protect their permanent makeup. Protect those luscious lips, perfectly shaped brows and those amazing, winged eyeliner tattoos. The team at DAELA want to share a few reasons WHY you want to protect them, and we are also going to share our favoritest available on the market!

Does Sunscreen Help Preserve Cosmetic Tattoos?
Does Sunscreen Help Preserve Cosmetic Tattoos? YES!

Using SPF on your face is important for everyone, regardless of whether or not they have cosmetic tattoos.

However, when you have cosmetic tattoos, there are additional reasons to prioritize sun protection. Here are multiple reasons to use SPF on your face when you have cosmetic tattoos:

  1. Protection from fading: Sun exposure can cause cosmetic tattoos to fade over time. The pigments used in tattoos can break down when exposed to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, leading to color fading or distortion. Applying sunscreen regularly can help protect your cosmetic tattoos from the harmful effects of UV radiation, helping them maintain their vibrancy for longer.
  2. Preservation of tattoo shape: Sun damage can affect the shape and clarity of cosmetic tattoos. Excessive sun exposure may cause the lines and details of your tattoo to blur or spread, making them less defined. Applying sunscreen can help prevent this distortion, allowing your cosmetic tattoos to retain their original shape and precision.
  3. Prevention of discoloration: Exposure to sunlight can result in discoloration of cosmetic tattoos. UV rays can cause the pigments in the tattoo to darken or change color, leading to an undesirable appearance. Regularly using sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) can help minimize the risk of discoloration and keep your cosmetic tattoos looking their best.
  4. Minimization of skin damage: Sunburns and sun damage can harm the skin surrounding your cosmetic tattoos. Sunburned skin may peel or flake, which can disrupt the tattoo’s appearance and even cause ink to be lost. Applying sunscreen can help prevent sunburn and minimize the overall damage to your skin, which indirectly contributes to maintaining the integrity of your cosmetic tattoos.
  5. Reduction of potential complications: Sunburned or damaged skin can be more prone to complications after tattoo procedures. If you’re considering getting touch-ups or additional tattoos, it’s important to protect your skin and prevent sunburns. Sun-damaged skin may not hold the ink as well and may result in an uneven or unsatisfactory outcome. By regularly using sunscreen, you can help reduce the risk of complications and ensure better results for future tattoo procedures.
  6. Overall skin health: Even beyond protecting your cosmetic tattoos, using sunscreen on your face offers numerous benefits for your skin’s health. Sunscreen helps shield your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of skin cancer, premature aging, wrinkles, and dark spots. By incorporating sunscreen into your daily skincare routine, you’re taking a proactive step toward maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin.
